Barry MacEwen is a vibrant and committed instructor who takes what he’s passionate about and shares it with each and every one of his students.
Barry started diving in 2010. He always enjoyed snorkeling. Barry always watched with envy and curiosity as the boats packed with divers left the docks and then later returned with all the divers having smiles on their faces. His first experience with diving was a Discover Scuba Diving experience while on vacation in Hawaii. The rest is history!
Becoming an Instructor
Barry has been teaching with Total Diving since May 2016. Following his recreational certification, he has become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, among many other certifications that can be found listed below so scroll down to see where you might see Barry during your next dive class with us.
The Best Part About Being an Instructor
Being an instructor is fun! Barry’s favorite part about it would be that he gets to share his passion of diving with new divers. There’s nothing like getting someone hooked. Barry also takes pride in ensuring that all divers he certifies are safe divers and respectful of their environment and peers.
Outside of teaching, Barry enjoys just diving with his students! When it comes to being an instructor, there’s nothing more fun than just getting to dive with the people you’ve taught. Barry also likes to talk about diving and his experiences with people who have never been diving.
If you’re looking for vacation recommendations, Barry has been diving in Hawaii, Italy, Greece, Jamaica, Mexico, Cuba, and a few local sites such as Les Escoumins and Long Sault. Each destination was a unique and amazing diving experience.
Everyone has a really cool diving story. When asked, Barry said that he had two. First, he was in a Cenote in Mexico and he experienced a halocline for the first time ever. Obviously, this experience was breathtaking and one that he remembers vividly. The second is when he was selected to do an exclusive dive in the fish aquarium at the Biodome! He was part of a special pilot project where some of our divers at Total Diving were chosen to dive in the tanks.
Advice For Beginners
Like any good instructor, Barry has sound advice for beginners. His advice is that you shouldn’t wait to become a diver! He waited way too many years on the beach while divers were out there experiencing the underwater world. Looking back on it, Barry believes he should have started out a bit younger so he’d have more time to explore. But, as anyone who’s met Barry can tell you, he’s living proof that no matter what time you start diving, you can have fun and make great memories.
