Fun Facts & Info

You can count on Total Diving for safe dive activities. We take your safety and ours, very seriously. Along those lines, you need to carry some sort of diver insurance to participate in any and all Total Diving dive adventures.

Diver insurance is inexpensive and, yet, it will save a lot of headaches to you, your family and ourselves, in the unlikely event of a dive accident.

It's just another proof of one of our motto: Be safe. Have MORE fun!

...but what exactly is diver insurance?

Its main purpose is to cover medical costs associated with scuba diving accidents, especially when diving outside the province of Quebec.

Note to divemasters and instructors: This is different than your professional liability insurance that covers you, as the name states, for liability arising from your professional activities. You still need to cover yourself for diving related medical emergencies.

Why is it more important outside Quebec?

Simply because our Quebec Government estimates that medical costs outside the province are very inexpensive. Hint: It's not true!

When you need medical services outside the province, the Quebec Government will reimburse you what they think is an appropriate fee for the medical service you received. In all cases, it is much less than what it will have cost you! Your diver insurance will pick up the difference.

Diver insurance also covers costs like those associated with an evacuation to the nearest medical facility or recompression chamber which can be quite huge when you are on a deserted Caribbean island!

Why is this insurance required by Total Diving when we dive in Quebec or in Ontario?

Simply because we believe that the cost of diver insurance coverage is low enough that a safe diver cannot justify diving without it. You are covered for a whole year and you no longer have to worry about it!

Furthermore, DAN has a 24 hour hotline to guide your steps in the unlikely event of a dive accident. You can reach that hotline, collect, from anywhere in the World - even from Ontario and Quebec!

It's well worth it. It makes plain safety sense. And, on top of it all, if you take DAN insurance, part of your money goes to finance research undertaken by DAN.

Where can I get such an insurance?

There are two main sources of diver insurance: DAN & PADI.

We recommend DAN because of their Emergency Hotline and because the profits are used to finance research in health, safety & scuba diving.  However, please feel free to verify the coverage offered by both of them, to determine what best suits your needs.

  • DAN - Divers Alert Network - Total Diving's Choice! Subscribe here and you will be able to immediately print your proof of insurance taking effect right away.
  • PADI - Professional Association of Diving Instructors.

Don't forget to keep your DAN membership and insurance card in your wallet with your diver certification card... And, please, make sure you have it with you when you come diving with us!
